Anton Bruckner

  • Symphony No. 7 in E major, WAB 107

Completed in 1959, Dmitri Shostakovich’s first cello concerto was written in collaboration with his close friend Mstislav Rostropovich. After learning the score in just three days, the legendary cellist made some suggestions for improvement. Shostakovich demurred, explaining his decision to reject the changes thus: »If I follow your suggestions, you’ll be the only person who can play it. But I write for everyone.« Tugan Sokhiev, a conductor who is more than just an authority on Shostakovich, combines the concerto with Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony, that work whose premiere under Arthur Nikisch finally brought the composer his long-awaited breakthrough.
